North Star Project Overview PDF Print E-mail
North Star is an exciting initiative for Alaska high school students interested in learning more about careers in the health sciences and the other sciences.

Students in North Star work with UAA faculty and researchers.  They work with The Imaginarium.  They meet other students from all over Alaska, and they contribute their own perspective and ideas to make science in Alaska real for themselves, their friends, and their communities.

Along the way, North Star participants create their own video documentaries and blogs.  They work with mentors at hospitals and at UAA.  North Star gives them a taste of the possibilities their future may hold and helps them make that future what they want it to be.

The North Star project was created by The Imaginarium so that it could directly help high school students across Alaska to turn their interest in science into a life full of the rewards that a challenging field like health science brings.  Through funding provided by the National Institutes of Health, The Imaginarium's North Star project is supporting UAA's U-DOC program.  U-DOC, and its associated programs at UAA, brings students to the university for 6 weeks.

In those 6 weeks of summer, North Star students participate in the U- DOC curriculum, live in dorms, become friends, and discover how research in Alaska is helping us better understand human health.  After the U-DOC program is over and students have returned to their communities, the students continue the relationships they formed through use of this website.  The website allows its registered users to join forum discussions, post blogs, make video documentaries, and share with the entire world what they have learned about a health topic at UAA and in their own community.

North Star can be a great beginning on your future.  To learn more about the project, feel free to check out the links on this page, contact us, or visit other parts of this site.  If you ever thought that the health sciences or other sciences just might be part of your future, this may be where you begin.
